As a member of the Senate Appropriations\, Foreign Relations\,\n\nJudiciary\, Ethics\, and Small Business committees\, Senator Coons is uniquely positioned to nurture\n\nAmerican innovation and make the United States more competitive in the global market.\n\n\n\nPrior to his public service\, the senator worked for one of the 200 largest privately held companies in the\n\nUnited States\, headquartered in Delaware\, where he helped the company expand and create hundreds\n\nof jobs. Committed to fulfilling the economic potential of American innovation\, Senator Coons has\n\nintroduced legislation and worked aggressively for a series of measures designed to help create jobs and\n\ngrow our economy. He strongly supports research and development\, introducing legislation to make\n\npermanent the R&D tax credit and allow innovative startup companies to access it. He has also worked\n\non legislation to modernize our copyright laws and patent system. Senator Coons wrote the section of\n\nthe CARES Act that provided $12 billion in debt relief for small businesses with SBA loans\, was one of\n\nthree authors of the first bill to fund a second round of PPP\, and has focused on ensuring the SBA's\n\nsignature 7a and 504 programs have the funding needed to support small businesses as we emerge from\n\nthe pandemic.\n\n\n\nThe senator graduated from Amherst College with a B.A. in chemistry and political science\, and earned a\n\nlaw degree from Yale Law School and a Master's in Ethics from Yale Divinity School. A longtime New\n\nCastle County resident\, he lives in Wilmington with his wife\, Annie\, and their three children\, Michael\,\n\nJack\, and Maggie.
